BiographyHello everyone! I am Kellen Hemmings and I will be kicking off my (technically) second year teaching here at JMPS with our middle school Student Skills classes, our high school Traditional Logic class, and a new senior elective I am offering during the second trimester on Career Development and Future Planning.
For extracurriculars this year I am returning as the high school head coach for girls’ varsity basketball and as the head coach for both junior high and high school track and field. Additionally, I have become the Assistant Athletic Director here at JMPS to help grow and improve our already competitive athletic program. I was born and raised here in Tempe, Arizona along with my two younger brothers and younger sister. While the experience of being a full-time teacher is still relatively new to me, being a James Madison Patriot is not. From my eighth-grade year of middle school to my senior year of high school, I played basketball and baseball here at JMPS. As a homeschooler, I loved to find an encouraging and supportive community that welcomed me into their group. Aside from sports, I also did some volunteer work, sat in on several different classes while waiting for the team to leave for games, and studied for and took the PSAT through JMPS. When I was not playing sports for JMPS in high school, I competed in the homeschool speech and debate league STOA in dozens of events for five years, and was a part of Boy Scout Troop 7, achieving the Rank of Eagle Scout my senior year. After graduating high school in 2018, I moved to Purcellville, Virginia to attend Patrick Henry College. During my time there, I worked on earning a dual major in American Politics and Policy, and Economics and Business Analytics through a five-year program. Due to a chronic illness that developed during my junior and senior years of college and the passing of my father in 2023, I moved back here to Arizona to be with family. Currently, I am working on finishing the last few classes towards my degree. Even though I am still working on finishing the last few requirements of my education, I got something more out of college then I could ever hope to achieve in my life when I met and fell in love with my wife Katie. We recently welcomed our first kid into the world this past spring and have been loving every second of parenting (even the not-so-fun parts). With whatever free time I am able to find I like to read, watch and play sports, workout, go on hikes, complete various home projects, and travel. |
