After spending a number of years observing from the outside and cheering on my children (as well as other family members and friends) while they participated in Patriot sports and extracurricular activities, I was excited two years ago to join the stellar and steadfast JMPS staff as the 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade language arts teacher. This year (like last year), I hope to continue to impart my love for words and images and the ways they work to my high school students. Although I come from a long line of teachers, I decided during college that I’d take a different career path. And for awhile, I did. I graduated from Northern Arizona University with a bachelor's degree in journalism, and in the decades since, I’ve written, edited, and designed for newspapers, magazines, and books. Somehow, though, I’ve almost always found myself teaching — not only my own children, whom I homeschooled, but also students from other families in learning co-ops and online classes. My husband, Shawn, and I have lived in Tempe since we were married in 1995. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and playing the piano, as well as dabbling in photography and textile arts. Our four children have all enjoyed their time as Patriots, playing a variety of sports. I'm proud to say that my oldest and youngest sons can now both be found alongside me on the JMPS campus every day (one as a teacher and one as a student).
