My Biography

I was born in Lake Zurich, IL, and lived in the area until I was 9 years old, at which point my family moved to Arizona. After graduating from McClintock High School, I spent a year attending classes at Mesa Community College. I then transferred to Wheaton College, where I earned my B.A. in Spanish in 1999. I also minored in Bible, Family Studies, and, unofficially, Frisbee. In 2007, I completed my M.A.Ed., Curriculum and Instruction degree at the University of Phoenix.

My wife and I met in college and got married in January, 1999.  After college, I worked as a youth pastor, substitute teacher, sales associate in downtown Chicago, and restaurant manager, but my ultimate goal was to teach. In 2003, my wife and I were ready for a break from Chicago winters. I heard about the charter school movement in Arizona, as my two younger brothers were attending one, and decided to send out my résumé. When I discovered JMPS, I fell in love with the school and was willing to teach anything to be at the school.

I am entering my eighth year at JMPS. I currently teach junior high English and high school Self Reliance. I am also the Athletic Director, Ultimate Frisbee and softball coach, build the sets for the school play, and supervise the fencing club.  I enjoy everything that I do at JMPS so much that I continue to look for ways to get more involved.

In my spare time, I enjoy tearing my house apart and remodeling it. I like anything that involves power tools. I also enjoy playing Frisbee, mountain biking, running, reading, cooking, camping, watching movies, swing dancing, spending time with my daughter Elsa and my wife, and watching the Chicago Bears.

Favorite trips:

Vieques, Puerto Rico - Vieques is home of the best bio-luminescent bay in the world.  Mrs. FritzMiller and I visited Vieques, and the bio bay, in 2005.  http://www.biobay.com/

Rome and Florence, Italy - We spent 10 days in Italy to celebrate our 9th anniversary (why wait until the 10th) in 2008.  Aside from the Sistine Chapel, the highlight was taking a tour of the Tuscan vineyards that culminated in a pasta making class and meal in a 14th century villa in the Tuscan hillside.

Washington, D.C. - In 2009, we decided to take a trip to our nation's capital, since I had never been there.  We did all the normal touristy things, but the highlight was the hour and a half walk with Elsa asleep in her baby sling with my jacket around her and just her legs sticking out of the bottom of the jacket.  I got more comments during that time than the Lincoln Memorial normally gets.
