My Bio
Born in Minnesota, I am fortunate to have been educated in an excellent public school system. In high school I played hockey, French horn and tuba in band and orchestra, sang in choir, and acted and danced in theater. Originally a music major in college, I switched majors and colleges a few times (from Music to English History to Composition to Education) before graduating with a B.S. in Elementary Education and Special Education from Minnesota State University at Mankato. For almost 20 years I worked with and for people with disabilities in a wide range of settings and capacities, in direct care, administration and as a professional advocate and lobbyist. I have also worked as a professional musician, maintenance man, landscaper, waiter, public and motivational speaker, consultant, expert witness, and trainer. A lifelong idealist, I was attracted to the open field of charter schools, and the challenging goal of developing a unique school for committed students was exciting. I will admit, 13 years after Steve, Faith and I started the development of this project, that I am still excited to be a part of James Madison Preparatory School. One of the best things about teaching is that every day, every class, and every student is different. I enthusiastically enjoy surprises. The courses I teach at Madison Prep are World History, World Religions, Music Appreciation, and American Government. I am the proud father of three (2 daughters, 1 son). Outside of school I enjoy playing and listening to music, walking and training my dogs, backpacking, hiking, camping, travel, reading, writing, shooting, photography, and sports (hockey, baseball, track, table tennis, frisbee, badminton, football).

Little Buddha Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, Produced by Jeremy Thomas, Miramax, color, PG, 123 minutes, 1993- Little Buddha is the story of an American boy who is believed by Tibetan monks to be the reincarnation of a Tibetan Buddhist Lama. Set in Seattle and various locations in Asia, the film accurately portrays Buddhist beliefs and practices, and also tells the story of the life of Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha). Because this feature film is accurate in the details, because it is an excellent example of the filmmakers art, and because the story lines are compelling, it is an excellent film to share with World Religion students.
